Tree Planting at Broadwood

Special Tree Planting Day at Broadwood
Thank you, Mr Cottle, for organising the Tree Planting Day at Broadwood last week. What a day we had!
All the children were brilliant, clearing the site of rubbish and then using the trundle wheels to carefully measure the space for each tree. Digging, what a task that was; lurking just below the topsoil... sandstone. The children worked like excavators and archaeologists. Then it was finally time for the trees and stakes to go in. Caitlin and Naomi showed the children how to ensure the trees were planted at the right depth. It was much easier back-filling! It was then time for our youngest children to mulch each tree. With gloved hands, they scooped out the mulch and carefully spread it around the base of each tree. The final task for the children was to water. Our new trees were very thirsty, so back and forth across the playing field, the children carried cans of water, drenching the roots. Thank you to all the children and adults who came out to support the event.
The Eco Council, with Mr Cottle, took care to plant the final three fruit trees in the orchard.
The day was long, we ran out of time. Caitlin and Naomi added the water bags around each tree and Mrs Griffin filled each one with two cans of water.
We now have fifteen beautiful trees at Broadwood, which will offer some welcome shade in the summer (when grown) and fresh fruit in the autumn.
As Mr Cottle has said, now it is time to care for our new trees and a watering rota is going to be drawn up.
